A Letter To My Son on His 12th Birthday

Wow, Ethan, today you are 12 years old. I can hardly believe it myself. Happy Birthday to my bestest buddy.

Over the last 12 years there have been so many things that I have wanted to tell you, that I wanted to share with you and that I have wanted to teach you. I’m not always great with words, but here goes nothing. I have to start somewhere, right?

We’ve told you your entire birth story from start to finish, and you can also read the entire story in more detail right here. But what I never told you was that I loved you before I even met you. I carried you for 9 months as you grew and my heart filled with love. A love so strong to form a great bond between me and you, my dear son.

I won’t sugarcoat it, the first year was tough. I was young and not prepared for life as a mother of two young children. I was trying to figure it all out and it was a big mess at times.  You were colicky. You cried – a lot. But you have always been a blessing to my heart.

The next few years went by so fast. I continued to teach you, guide you and love you. You were growing up right in front of me. These last couple of years have been difficult, I know they have been tough. You have endured so much heartache and hardships. I won’t get into those details – because that’s your story to tell.  You have accomplished so much within yourself.  You have shown me such courage and amazing strength. You have been there for your dad, for me and for your sister through many difficult challenged. You have been through so much in your 12 years, much more than most can say in 40 years. You are strong, brave and you have shown tremendous strength. Don’t ever doubt yourself, your heart is true and will always guide you to where you need to be.

The next few years will see you to 20. Right before my eyes, you’ll stand tall as the man who I know you can be.  I pray that you will continue to be the boy that I have raised.  I want you to continue to be happy, to always follow your heart, to spread your wings and fly but to know that you’re home is always right here with me.

So today, I’m wishing you the most special and happiest of birthdays. I love you more than words can ever begin to describe and I am so proud of the boy that you are.
