It’s Not Always Sunshine and Rainbows: A Letter To My Sister

I was three years old when mom and dad brought you home from the hospital. You were a loud and obnoxious baby. But you were my baby. I loved you from the moment that I met you.

When we were young, we were the best of friends. We were always together, playing and laughing as children do.  But it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows between us.  I haven’t always been the best sister.  We started to drift apart right around the time that I became a teenager. You were the annoying little sister that wanted to copy everything about her big sister. I would squirm and clench my teeth whenever I heard your voice calling out to me.  Anything I did, you wanted to do too. I hated you. We fought. A lot. We most definitely had our fair share of fights and tears throughout the next couple of years.

Gladly, we both grew out of it

My time with you now is some of the most valuable time I have, and you’re one of my best friends.  I am so grateful for the friendship that we have found in one another.  We might not talk every day, but even then, I know that no matter what we will always stand by one another.

The relationship between siblings is a strong one, but there is nothing that can compare to the relationship between sisters.  Just remember that I will always be your big sister. Your friend and I will always be there for you.

Happy Birthday little sister.

Here are four of my favorite quotes about sisters.

Sister is probably the most competitive relationship within the family, but once the sisters are grown, it becomes the strongest relationship. (Margaret Mead)

The best thing about having a sister was that I always had a friend (Cali Rae Turner)

Having a sister is like having a best friend you can’t get rid of. You know whatever you do, they’ll still be there. (Amy Li)

You may be as different as the sun and the moon, but the same blood flows through both your hearts. You need her, as she needs you.  (George R.R. Martin)
