Things That Nobody Told Me About Raising A Teenager

I’ll be real with you all for a minute – raising kids has been hard.  I’m barely keeping it together all while raising two teenagers, aged 12 and 14. I know what you’re thinking – I’m much too young to be raising a teenager, let alone two of these annoying brats, right?  LOL!

I’ll confess, I never actually imagined what my life would look like with two teenagers. I don’t think anyone ever really thinks about this stage in life.  I remember growing up and thinking about my life with the cutest little newborn and the well-behaved toddlers. I could even picture the first day of school – but never did the teenage years enter into my wildest of dreams.

They Always Need To Go Somewhere

Every. Single. Fucking. Day. Seriously. A friend’s house, the mall, hockey practice, the library. Congratulations, your car just became your second home until one of them get their driving license. Two years and waiting. But we’re not counting, right?

They Sleep Like No Tomorrow

Do you remember when you use to bribe, beg and plead with them to take a nap or to just go the fuck to sleep? Now, you’ll find yourself running the vacuum right outside their bedroom doors at 12 noon, so that you have someone to talk with.

They Are Bored,. Always So Bored

Really? Despite being on electronic overload, boasting to their many friends on social media, they will still whine and complain that they are bored. They’ll annoy you endlessly until you toss on that taxi hat and drive, drive to where-ever they may need to be.

They Are Expensive Now, More Than Ever

I used to cringe at the grocery store every damn time a can of formula or a package of diapers rang through. Now, my heart races as they toss random food options into the cart when they think I’m not looking – I swear I have a panic attack every time we enter the darn grocery store. Oh, and did I mention, that their clothing is also much more expensive. Seriously, I’m talking $25 a T-Shirt, compared to the $4.00 T-Shirt I bought my 7-year-old niece for Christmas. Whaaaaat?

They Still Like Cartoons

Every once in a while, I’ll catch one of them lounging on the sofa, cuddled up with a blanket watching the cartoons. They even still sing the theme songs – though I’m pretty sure this is just to annoy the crap out of me.

Are you raising a teenager, share your experience. What’s something that no one ever told you about raising a teen?

  1. LOL. I laughed throughout the entire post and you made me realize that I should definitely enjoy my time before I have children because you know it theyll be teens!

  2. It’s so true!! We don’t think about that time when they actually grow up! I think it will be harder as now we can take the kids to the park and they are happy but teenagers are never satisfied!!!

  3. Oh god, the expense! My daughter turned 13 last year and she costs me more money now than ever before. Keeping up with the latest trends seems to be a full time job and sending her to school costs me an absolute fortune too. Can’t they stay little forever? LOL

  4. Haha I love your title, it’s such an eyecatcher! And I haven’t really thought about raising teenagers because I feel like it’s just SO far away, but if I have kids, that time comes pretty soon I guess!

  5. Oh my, I am still in the baby stage so I don’t even want to THINK about the teenage years. But I do remember my own experience of using the dad taxi (and, embarrassingly, I didn’t get my P’s until I was around 23…) and gosh it must have annoyed him lol. The things we parents do, huh?

  6. Hahaha we used to do that to mum when shopping, I don’t have kids yet but you’re right when we thinking about our future kids we only think upto first day at school not teenage years

  7. LoL. I am a toddler’s mom. But to be honest, I know somewhere inside, its easy now, although it seems difficult. As they grow up into a teenager, that will be the hardest part. They will be in such a sophisticated state of age where they think and act as if they are the most mature people in the world (I too did!) when the fact is they are just….teenagers. You bring out the right points about raising one 🙂

  8. Haha I love this! I don’t have teenagers (I’m still in the toddler and infant stage!) but I feel like this was me not too long ago (but really it was quite awhile ago…and now I’m feeling really old!)

  9. I’m not rasping any children at all (can I class my cats as children? 😂) buy woah teenagers sound like a challenge! I remember those years though, good times! Ree love30

  10. Haha! This made me laugh. I do not have teenagers yet, I have a 1 month old and a 5 year old so I am not looking forward to this.. Most of the things you described were me as a teenager. You got this momma
