Every relationship needs time to recharge and rejuvenate. Rick and I have been a couple for more than half of our lives, and we’ve had children for almost that same time. These last two years have been trying on our relationship, between Rick’s diagnosis with cancer and our daughter’s challenging time with mental health — we needed this more than one could imagine. We recently took a short drive up to Wakefield, Quebec to visit the charming Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa for a romantic Bed & Breakfast package.
Bedtime at The Wakefield Mill
There are 42 rooms in The Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa located on the property in the original Miller’s House, the Main Building and the Eco-River Lodge. Room choices include the Chalet 1840, Heritage Rooms or Eco-River Lodge Park Rooms with either 1 Queen bed or 2 Queen beds. Both the Eco-River Lodge and the Main Building offer the River Grand Room – these rooms are more spacious and will charm you with their perfection.
All rooms are luxuriously decorated in neutral colours with natural furnishing and enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi, flat screen TV, coffee making facilities, full-size executive writing desk and seating areas.
The first thing we noticed when we walked into our Heritage Room was how spacious the room was and the fantastic views that our third-floor room captured.
Dining at the Wakefield Mill
There are two main dining options at The Wakefield Mill, The Muse Restaurant, and The Heron Wine Bar.
The Muse Restaurant is embraced by The Mill’s one-meter thick stonewalls, warmed by a large open-hearth, double-sided fireplace, and extended with a glassed-in solarium overlooking MacLaren Falls. The atmosphere is warm and elegant. The dining room can seat up to 80 people for dinner. The menu emphasizes fine French and Québécois cuisine, infused with international flair.
The Heron Wine Bar offers guests a more relaxed and modern dining experience. Guests can indulge in a delicious menu paired with wine or stick with the classic Mill Burger and fries.
Breakfast was included in our package and was served in The Heron Wine Bar & Lounge, complete with a cold buffet that offered cereal, yogurt, bread items and fresh fruit. In addition to the buffet choices, guests can also order directly from the breakfast menu. The entire breakfast experience was exceptional and delicious.
Activities at The Wakefield Mill
The main draw to The Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa is, of course, the luxurious spa and all it offers including various types of massages.
However, there is much more to do at The Mill. Guests can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool (closed in the winter), two outdoor hot tubs and use of the red cedar barrel sauna.
If you have time, you may wish to visit the full exercise room located just a few short steps away from the Main Building.
The Heron Wine Bar and Lounge is relaxed, inviting and equipped with a complete bar, plenty of seating, a pool table and even board games for your enjoyment.
If you are on the adventurous side, you may choose to take in the natural beauty and enjoy the breath-taking views surrounding The Mill and the Gatineau Parks. There are various trails all with unique and picturesque views for you to experience throughout the entire year. Enjoy the vast cross-country ski trails in the winter and the hiking and cycling network in the summer.
We loved our stay at The Wakefield Mill Hotel & Spa and would recommend it to those looking for a romantic getaway just a short drive away from the City limits. The gorgeous grounds, the laid-back vibe, the hot tubs and the stunning views all made this a fabulous place to stay in Wakefield with the one who holds your heart.
